You get used to it. Eventually, you begin to tolerate the constant discomfort. Ultimately, you feel naked without it. The shakiness and anxiety fade as threat models and contingency plans come into focus. Slowly, your perspective shifts. You are always aware, always looking at the smallest movements in your peripheral vision, always looking towards every barely perceptible sound.

I think that the advantage is not necessarily the gun itself but the implications.
